2004 Conference Report

The 2004 Midwest Civil War Civilian Conference was another wonderful success. The conference which is held the last weekend of January every year in Crystal Lake is quickly becoming a must for the area reenactors and some historians.

The conference in 2004 had an exceptionally well received addition. There were workshops added on Friday afternoon. This gave those who wished to come in early an extra learning experience. The first workshop was by Stacy Hampton on hair dressing, and it even spent some time on menís hairstyles. The second workshop was an essential for new and older reenactors alike, 10 Ways to improve Your Impression hosted by Jo Marie Sozynski.

Fun was had by all at the Friday night reception, and the Saturday sessions were jammed full of useful information.

The keynote speaker was Carol Ann Dickenson, who talked on Jewelry. Her insights and relaxed speaking style were just a pleasure. Other talks included Architecture, Photography, Entertainments, Education, Essential Look of Menís Clothing, and a Timeline Workshop. After the menís clothing section there were so many questions about neck wear that Kay Gnagey and P. Seth Magosky are going to pair up to do a Friday workshop on the topic in 2005.

One of the high points of the weekend is the Show and Tell Display of Originals on Saturday night. This differs from other displays of originals as each person is on hand near their collection to discuss the items. And there is usually a variety. People are encouraged to bring various Civil War artifacts to share with others. A real pleasure was also having K. Krewer bring a super selection of dresses from her vast personal collection.

We are looking forward to another successful year coming up. There is a wonderful lineup of speakers on tap, and some great topics, so look forward to next January in Crystal Lake.
